At the B2 level, you'll come across many prepositions that take the Genitive — especially in written language, journalism and exams. This group of prepositions is more formal and precise than the Dative/Accusative prepositions.

1️⃣ The most important Genitive prepositions

wegen	because of, due to	Wegen des Staus kam ich zu spät. (Because of the traffic jam, I arrived late.)
trotz	despite, although	Trotz des Regens gingen wir wandern. (Despite the rain, we went hiking.)
während	while, during	Während des Unterrichts darf man nicht telefonieren. (During class you're not allowed to make phone calls.)
statt / anstatt	instead of	Statt eines Geschenks gab er mir Geld. (Instead of a gift, he gave me money.)
aufgrund	due to, because of	Aufgrund der Krise verloren viele ihren Job. (Due to the crisis, many people lost their jobs.)
innerhalb	within (time/space)	Innerhalb eines Monats muss man antworten. (You have to reply within one month.)
außerhalb	outside (of)	Außerhalb der Stadt gibt es viel Natur. (Outside the city there's a lot of nature.)
infolge	as a consequence of	Infolge des Unfalls wurde die Straße gesperrt. (As a result of the accident, the road was closed.)
mithilfe	with the help of	Mithilfe eines Wörterbuchs kann man besser übersetzen. (With the help of a dictionary...)
anhand	based on, on the basis of	Anhand der Statistik sieht man den Trend. (Based on the statistics, you can see the trend.)
laut	according to (a source)	Laut einer Studie lernen Kinder schneller. (According to a study, children learn faster.)
hinsichtlich	with regard to, concerning	Hinsichtlich der Qualität ist dieses Produkt besser. (With regard to quality, this product is better.)

2️⃣ How to form the Genitive - A quick reminder

One-syllable words → add -es: des Mannes, des Kindes
Multi-syllable words → add -s: des Lehrers, des Computers

4️⃣ Genitive or Dative? — The difference between spoken and written language

In everyday spoken German, Germans often use the Dative instead of the Genitive:
